2010 KY Farm Bureau Summer Roadside Tour - Day1
We had a great first day on the 2010 Roadside Summer Tour. Our first stop was at Trunnell’s Market in Utica, outside of Owensboro, where we were treated to a fabulous lunch and tour of the market. Kevin Trunnell and the entire family and staff at Trunnell’s market were great, and the entire group enjoyed learning about how this fourth generation farm family has established a successful farm market and is growing a agritourism business. Our second stop of the day took us all the way to Cobden, Illinois where we visited Owl Creek Vineyard and Winery. This family vineyard began in 1980 when the original founder planted the first commercial wine grapes in the region. Today, Owl Creek is owned and operated by Brad Genung who has continued to grow the thriving business. We all enjoyed learning more about the art of grape growing and wine making from Brad, and of course the wine tasting was a fun event. Our evening meal took us just a short way down the road from Owl Creek to the historic Giant City Lodge. The lodge was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and was a wonderful building to see. Dinner gave old friends and new a great chance to visit and catch up.
