KALP Reflections at the end

I feel it is only appropriate to begin my travel blog with reflections after my final journey with my Kentucky Agriculture Leadership group.

Being a traveler, I had never enjoyed the structure tours that so many people are inclined to join when they decide to go on a trip away from their home. I am a firm believer in letting the mood of the day determine where I go.  A rainy day might mean sitting for hours in a café writing, allowing my morning of coffee and scones to lead to an afternoon of wine and cheese. While a sunny afternoon could have me hiking aimlessly through a forest to find the elusive waterfall talked about by the locals.

So when I began this program eighteen months ago, I wasn’t sure how I would survive the days that would require me to travel on a bus with my classmates. I must admit I was surprised to learn that I actually enjoyed traveling with the group.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to sign up for the “Single and Searching” 14-day bus tour of Europe. ’m not ready to turn in my backpack and Lonely Plant books just yet, but I will admit I did discover a few perks to traveling on a structured tour with friends.

First and foremost I didn’t have to drive or worry about public transportation schedules, which is nice on many levels. Yes, I am required to get up in time to catch a bus, but unlike public transport if I’m not there they will actually wait until I arrive before taking off to the next destination. Also, I can sleep while traveling without worrying if all my personal belongs will still be in the seat next to me when I awake from my nap. Above all I do not have to worry how I will get back to my overnight accommodations when the wine flows abundantly at a dinner, which has happened on numerous occasions with our group.

The second discovery I made in traveling with a group is how much closer friendships can grow as your experiences together expand. Be it the challenges of making across a border crossing in South America or the in-depth debates on politics and life while traveling from farm to farm…though you might not always agree and tempers may raise...I realized at the end of the day that I still wanted to sit down with these people and have a beer.

Like our other travels together, while in California we experience agriculture that was both familiar and unique.  From equine operations to artichoke farms, almonds orchards to cattle stockyards; there wasn’t much we missed out on as we traveled the Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys. A journey like this was a great trip to end our class together, I only wish the entire group could have been there.
